I think I've got the lists online finally. It took up more of my day
than I wanted to spend, but it's done and I learned a few lessons on
 the way.

The subscribe/unsubscribe and user options URL is below, attached by
the Mailman list manager. If you go to the plain "listinfo" URL,
you'll see a list of the lists that are available now.

For each list you subscribe to, you must set whatever settings you
like for that particular list. I don't like that either... It
should give each subscriber a meta page to set things for all of the
lists they are subscribed to, shouldn't it?

Also, for those who prefer to use a News (usenet) reader for this,
you may access them all at "news.pdxlinux.org". This is NOT a
newsfeed, but rather just the single access point for them, at least
for the time being. If you like, you can even unsubscribe from the
email lists, and just use the usenet interface.

I think that mail sent to the old address should find it's way here
now. If you missed any mail while they didn't work right, you might
check the archive... It might have gotten there but not sent out.

not going to have a Clinic this month. I'm sorry for the late notice on

Repeat *no* Clinic this Saturday!

--Hi all. I sent this to the Linux Evangelist (Mr. Mandel) already, but =
am not sure if it was received so I am sending it here as well.

Dear PLUG members,=20

My name is Lee Klemp and I am on the board of directors for the =
Northwest LAN Gamers Association. We are in the process of organizing =
our spring 2002 event called "The Promised LAN." The Promised LAN is a =
3-day "LAN conference" which brings together gamers and PC industry =
businesses in an interactive environment. The Promised LAN will include =
the full spectrum of PC enthusiasts, while also incorporating key =
players in the computer game software and hardware development industry.

With our event just over a month away we have over 400 of 500 PC =
gamers/enthusiasts signed up, and that figure has been climbing. We are =
a CPL qualifying event hosting various tournaments, and we are also =
planning various workshops such as custom case modding, possibly =
overclocking, and we would love to have a Linux workshop. We have =
brought in some supporting vendors/sponsors, and still have space for =
more.

We would very much like to work with PLUG on promoting Linux to the PC =
gamer/enthusiast. Perhaps you would be interested in sponsoring our =
event by hosting a Linux workshop at the event. This would be a great =
opportunity for us to spread the word about Linux and to help people =
learn more about it. I am new to Linux myself and I also find a lot of =
people would like to know more about running Linux as a server, =
workstation, or as a gateway router for a home network. We will be =
distributing registration packets to every event attendee. These =
packets can contain any promotional materials you'd like to have =
distributed, and are a great way to communicate to our audience.

We would be happy to work with PLUG, or any interested member, to make =
something work. We figure 60%+ of the attendees will be from the =
greater Portland metropolitan area and hopefully this will attract more =
Linux users and Linux promotion. If you have any questions or require =
more details about The Promised LAN 2002, please contact us or see our =
website at http://www.thepromisedlan.net We also have a press release =
available, in .pdf format, upon request. Thank you for your time. We =
look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,=20
Lee Klemp

There will be an advanced topic talk tomorrow (Wed) on Squeak Smalltalk.

For those of you who think you know Object Oriented Programming, but
have never used SmallTalk, this a a good intro.

For those who wonder what the biggest deal is about OOP, this is also a
good intro.

For those who know more than Ken, and want to challenge him, you have to
wait 15 minutes....

The talk will be all demo -- no slides!

Squeak is a Smalltalk development system which is free and runs on most
computers. Ken Dickey will give a live demo of the Squeak system,
starting at the 20,000 foot view (cool eToys) then getting into how
Smalltalk development works and down into the 1 foot level (like what
happens when you drop into the debugger).

Ken spend 5 years at Tektronix, 7 years at Apple, and more recently was
CTO of a startup in Sydney Australia

Meeting is at 7:00 pm at It's a Beautiful Pizza on Belmont

Directions:

East on Belmont to Zupan's Grocery, then find a place to
park other than Zupan's lot. Pizza is two doors east of
Zupan's, on the North side of the street. (They may be on
the south side of the street; they are moving, but have
promised that there will be space for us to meet in.)

         BUS: #15 http://www.tri-met.org/schedule/r015.htm
Belmont
                     10 frequency (east/west) 3:30 to 6:30.
                     15 frequency (east/west) 6:30 to 9:00.
                     30 frequency (east/west) 9:00 to 12:00.

         BUS: #75 http://www.tri-met.org/schedule/r075.htm
39th
                     ?? frequency (north/south) <5 blocks east>

If you cross the Morrison Bridge Eastbound, you land on
Belmont, continue straight about 30 blocks. Parking is
at a premium for those who drive. The place will be on
your left just past Zupan's. The 'sign' is a yellow
banner hanging from the wall above the awning, and pretty
         hard to read at nite.

Belmont is one block south of Morrison, 5 blocks south of
Stark, 10 blocks south of Burnside; and 6 blocks north of
         Hawthorne.

Chris Wright from wirex will talk on:Linux Security Modules (LSM).

[They are more likely to be on the south side now]

         BUS: #15 http://www.tri-met.org/schedule/r015.htm
Belmont
                     10 frequency (east/west) 3:30 to 6:30.
                     15 frequency (east/west) 6:30 to 9:00.
                     30 frequency (east/west) 9:00 to 12:00.

         BUS: #75 http://www.tri-met.org/schedule/r075.htm
39th
                     ?? frequency (north/south) <5 blocks east>

If you cross the Morrison Bridge Eastbound, you land on
Belmont, continue straight about 30 blocks. Parking is
at a premium for those who drive. The place will be on
your left just past Zupan's. The 'sign' is a yellow
banner hanging from the wall above the awning, and pretty
         hard to read at nite.

Belmont is one block south of Morrison, 5 blocks south of
Stark, 10 blocks south of Burnside; and 6 blocks north of
         Hawthorne.

I'm sorry for the previous posting.
My fingers were faster than my brain.

Anyway, I'm arranging a PLUG meeting for July, but it will be
unusual as the first Thursday is on the Fourth of July and I
wasn't able to get a room at PSU for the second Thursday of the
month.

Thus, the July PLUG meeting will be:

                       7:00 PM July 11, 2002
                               at
                       It's a Beautiful Pizza
                         3342 SE Belmont
                         Portland, Oregon

I'm still arranging things with a likely speaker.
I will make an "official" announcement once that is done.

Sorry for the inconsistancies. However, don't blame me.
Blame Thomas Jefferson.

                                          Sincerely,

Hello Folks,

Just a reminder here that Riverdale School will be hosting a little
party on the 4th. We're just trying to say thanks to PLUG and have some
fun with the software we use. Call it an Open Source show & tell if you
like...

We'll have the Riverdale Lab open from 10:00 to 12:00 noon on the 4th.
The goal is simply to play with software and have fun. It's in the
morning so you can have some Linux fun and still do other traditional
4th of July stuff.

This won't be a clinic but you can still bring software to play with.
We'll provide a few dual Xeon servers for you to play with. Anyone have
some favorite network games?

Directions: http://www.riverdale.k12.or.us/direct.html

;-) Paul

			 MEETING ANNOUNCEMENT

		    The Portland Linux/Unix Group
			      will meet
		      7 PM Thursday Jul 11, 2002
				  at
			It's a Beautiful Pizza
		       <www.BeautifulPizza.com>
			   3342 SE Belmont
			   Portland, Oregon

      **********************************************************

			     PRESENTATION

			   Problem Session
		     We will discuss short topics

I'm late announcing this meeting because I haven't been
able to line up a speaker for July. It has been a problem
as we will not have a projector available and a lot of
people are out of town on vacation.

However, come and order Pizza and beer and we will
discuss whatever comes up. We have done this in the past
and it actually works out well to have a session devoted
to problems and short topics from time to time.

      **********************************************************

          Agenda:

              7:00 - 7:30 Business
We will discuss the status of our ongoing projects
including the monthly hands on clinics, PLUG for
                   Education, etc.

              7:30 - 8:30 Presentation

                   See above

              9:00 - ... Beer
Instead of going to The Lucky Labrador like usual,
we are have beer and pizza during the meeting.

Hello Everyone on this listserv!

I need volunteers to help with a computer day camp in Vancouver, WA late July and early August.

I work for the Youth Volunteer Corps (a non-profit youth organization) and this summer, I will be coordinating a computer day camp for youth 11-18, where they will refurbish donated (PC) computers and then distribute them to other non-profit agencies and people in need (ie. people with disability).

One huge component of the project involves youth disassembling computer parts, identifying them, and reassebling them to usable computers. I need volunteers to help my partner-in-crime Randy, a computer technician, to tutor the youth in learning the computer hardware components. Also, because Randy works full-time (and I know nothing about hardware), I need volunteers to fill in any gaps that may occur.

If you have any time you can spare, I would GREATLY appreciate it.

I need volunteers for the following days and times (if you can volunteer a day or two, that will be great! If you can spare half an hour or an hour, that would be fantastic, too!)

Tuesday 7/30 9:00-12:30
Wednesday 7/13 9:00-12:30
Friday 8/2 9:00-12:30

Tuesday 8/6 9:00-12:00
Wednesday 8/7 9:00-12:00

if you can help, please let me know. I can be reached at alan.kwok@esd112.org or at 360-750-7500 ext 378. You can also reach me at home at 503-957-2444

Thanks so much!!!

Alan

Linux Advanced Topic Talk Wed July 17th

[Hey look I updated the date this time!]

Speaker Phil Tomson

From Phil's Note:

I've created an open source, object oriented, task distribution
framework I call TaskMaster. TaskMaster allows users to easily create
their own runnable Task objects that can be distributed to multiple
machines on a network (which are running a slave program). Tasks are
sent out by a designated 'master' machine to available slaves. When a
slave receives a Task object it runs it. When a slave completes its
assigned task the master then 'harvests' the resulting data from it.
Potential applications:
* Testcase distribution (that's what I was using it for): testsuites for
some software packages can contain thousands of testcases, distributing
them across multiple slave machines can result in getting test results
faster.
* Distributed software builds: sort of a distributed 'make' where a
large piece of software (the Linux kernel for example) that has lots of
hierarchy can be built in pieces across several machines more quickly
than on one machine.
* Distributed computation: I have an example where I use several
machines to calculate the value of Pi using the Monte-Carlo method - the
more machines that are added, the faster the computation should go
(given fairly equal performance of slaves).

P.S. The Mid Willamette Valley Linux Users Group needs to
change meeting locations. I haven't heard anything
about the next meeting, except that it may be at David
Mandel's house in South Corvallis in mid August.
                See http://lug.peak.org/ for details.

P.S. The Eugene Linux Users Group meets regularly.
                See http://www.euglug.org for details.
