Hi all!

Let me first [re]introduce myself.  My name is Andrew Roy Jackman.  I
am originally from Oregon and I even participated in the PLUG list
some time ago.  I am now living in Salt Lake City, but I'm looking at
moving (in the very near future) to the Valley.  I'm currently working
at a company called Affiliated Computer Services, Inc.

entry system called RAPID

 I use Gentoo and Slackware and I don't top post.  I am also
developing a delivery management system on the beagleboard.

The reason for my writing to you (and joining your list) is to ask
about job opportunities in the area.  I don't really earn that much
and ACS isn't really the best employer, so anything is appreciated.  I
can handle $750/month in a call center if necessary.  My resume is

I'm a little uncertain about your language...  Are you suggesting the
call center job is available?  I would gladly invest in a firm, but I
don't really have to the financial resources to do so. :(  I would
gladly contribute to anything you had going, though, given I had
enough cash to pay for the rent, etc.

I just read the POSSE post.  Is that to what you are referring?  I
have been trying to get my department to switch to Linux.  We have a
monster of a room housing all of these computers (all running
Windows).  I wrote up a proposal to migrate all of the software to
Linux while making enhancements (like multi-threading), which would
save us CPU time and cost.  In addition, I wanted to put everything
either on Atom based machines or on embedded systems (I really wanted
to field test the beagle board!), so we could shrink the entire system
to a couple square feet, nearly eliminating our power, space, cooling,
and licensing requirements.  The selling point I loved was that our
development team would be encouraged to use open source languages and
tools which have an awesome track record for not going out of style.
Currently, we're using languages which expire in about 5-7 years,
making development/maintenance cost (both cash and stress) high.

Personally, I would die for a coding job, but my skills really aren't
at corporate level yet.  I feel sufficiently competent to do the above
mentioned port (I've seen a representative sample of the code), but
perhaps not at the clip seasoned pros can do it.  If someone was
willing to put up with a learning curve, I can offer myself as a Linux
sys-admin or programmer at convenient prices.  Right now I'm not doing
much more than department supervisor and systems monitor.

The company I work for is always hiring for call center type work, but the
work is at-home (only for Oregon residents). We post on Craigslist
frequently.

Just yesterday we had a big meeting because we need to hire upwards of 80
people in a short time and we're trying to figure out how we're going to
manage it.

Network Engineer 

Summary:  
The Network Engineer assists in the development, engineering,
implementation, and maintenance of the company's network communications. The
Network Engineer continually ensures the operation of the WAN/LAN
infrastructure.  The Network Engineer also assists with all aspects of

Position Description

Network Engineer

Summary:  
The Network Engineer assists in the development, engineering,
implementation, and maintenance of the company's network communications. The
Network Engineer continually ensures the operation of the WAN/LAN
infrastructure.  The Network Engineer also assists with all aspects of
network engineering, implementation, planning, testing, security,
performance management, monitoring, and ongoing support.


Primary Responsibilities:
Assist in the engineering, implementation and maintenance of our client's
Production, Test, DR and Corporate network platforms
Assist with the maintenance of the WAN/LAN, Voice and Network Security
supporting all our client's datacenters and corporate offices
Make recommendations for policy and procedural changes to accommodate new
technology and requirements
Perform technical writing in the development and production of
network/systems
Create and maintain documentation, procedural, and instructional manuals
Attend and participate in Technical Operations group meetings and meetings
with customers, to support existing environments as well as remaining
informed of new trends and innovations in the field of information
technology
Maintain excellent communication with the department manager on all tasks
and projects
Work occasional scheduled change windows at night and on weekends
Provide emergency on-call support on a rotating schedule
Other duties as assigned by manager

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Minimum of 5 years of IT experience (Network, Systems, or Information
security)
In-depth knowledge of TCP/IP fundamentals
Minimum of 3 years of network engineering and network security experience
required.
Experience with routers and switches (Cisco, Juniper, Foundry etc) required.
Experience with network firewalls (Cisco, Juniper or Checkpoint) required
Experience with DNS, and DHCP
Must have good troubleshooting skills (net. device and systems level)
Thorough understanding of network security aspects, common problems and
solutions (ACL, firewall filtering, and VPN)
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
