In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Derek, Depends on what you mean. I don't think Portland is short on Linux focused jobs, but a lot of the folks who advertise on the LUG list are looking for contract or contract to hire type jobs. I've certainly found work within my area of speciality within Linux here, and I think the embedded space (I work on Network processors) is one of the smaller groups of Linux employers in the city. If your focus is more general and WWW WWW2.0 related there should be plenty of opportunities. They just may not be described as Linux work on the surface. There is also the telecommute option. I and another coworker both live in or near Portland but telecommute for a company back in the Bay area. -Mike On Wed, May 7, 2014 at 11:34 PM, crquan wrote: > hi there, > > I'm currently in a major Hi-Tech company in SF Bay Area, > have been here for some years and get bored, intend to relocate > and Portland is pretty nice city that I have subscribed this ML > for some time, but till now can see only some contract / temporary > positions, > anyone know why? is the place lack of long time Linux related positions? > > > Thanks, > - Derek > _______________________________________________ > PLUG-jobs mailing list > PLUG-jobs at lists.pdxlinux.org > http://lists.pdxlinux.org/mailman/listinfo/plug-jobs > -- ?There are two ways of constructing a software design: One way is to make it so simple that there are obviously no deficiencies, and the other way is to make it so complicated that there are no obvious deficiencies. Any number of factors could be involved in a hiring decision and having 3 to 6 months to "make sure" is a very valuable asset, for the company doing the hiring. The job market around here isn't exactly clamoring for new talent so employers have little incentive to take higher risks right now. -wes On Wed, May 7, 2014 at 11:34 PM, crquan wrote: > hi there, > > I'm currently in a major Hi-Tech company in SF Bay Area, > have been here for some years and get bored, intend to relocate > and Portland is pretty nice city that I have subscribed this ML > for some time, but till now can see only some contract / temporary > positions, > anyone know why? is the place lack of long time Linux related positions? > > > Thanks, > - Derek > _______________________________________________ > PLUG-jobs mailing list > PLUG-jobs at lists.pdxlinux.org > http://lists.pdxlinux.org/mailman/listinfo/plug-jobs > -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Derek, A lot of companies (in the Bay Area; too) prefer to bring in new people in a "contract-to-hire" basis. This allows them to "try them out" first before hiring as a full time employee. I do think that the Portland area tends to do this a lot more frequently than I see in job postings in the Bay Area. It's possible that the labor laws in Oregon are slightly different than in California; which may drive the desire to not lock an employee in as an FTE, since it may be "harder" to get rid of bad employees in Oregon. I'm only surmising on this, though. This list is a pretty poor reflection of the job opportunities in the PDX area. Checked linked in, The Ladders, and there are a lot of great tech related recruiting/talent companies focused on the PDX area market. ~~shane -- "The farther one goes, the less one knows." ?Tao Te Ching On Wed, May 7, 2014 at 11:34 PM, crquan wrote: > hi there, > > I'm currently in a major Hi-Tech company in SF Bay Area, > have been here for some years and get bored, intend to relocate > and Portland is pretty nice city that I have subscribed this ML > for some time, but till now can see only some contract / temporary > positions, > anyone know why? is the place lack of long time Linux related positions? > > > Thanks, > - Derek > _______________________________________________ > PLUG-jobs mailing list > PLUG-jobs at lists.pdxlinux.org > http://lists.pdxlinux.org/mailman/listinfo/plug-jobs > -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Interesting, this isn't my take at all. I am constantly getting cold called and emailed by recruiters for full time positions in town, despite my linkedin profile (the only place i have anything interesting posted) saying explicitly that I've moved on from IT into developer support for the time being. Further, looking at the jobs listings from silicon florist, there are literally fucktons of positions open in town. Most are not listed as "sysadmin" - the world is moving on from that designation from my point of view. Pitch yourself as devops, get some modern languages under your belt (yes, I know shell and perl. I am the only employee of my company who has been paid to write perl, and for only one day - and we have around 220 developers. We don't look at resumes that don't have something more modern on them - ruby or python being a great jumping off spot, though I think Go might turn into the wave of the future?), and learn a configuration management system (puppet, chef, cfengine - free to download!) if you don't already know one, and you should have to beat recruiters off with a stick. As well, lots of linux-y jobs aren't posting at all - you have to hunt them out (which is ridiculous in this day and age, but c'est la vie). Specifically, government orgs and nonprofits seem pretty slow to realize that even a craigslist post is worth a thousand jobs list on yourorganization.(com|org) that few ever find. Finally, as was mentioned in this thread, this list isn't the premier job posting location for even sysadmins, it's just a place a few recruiters and other hardy souls have found. I like indeed.com (disclaimer, many friends work there), but i recommend siliconflorist to locals. I'm seeking someone to help us with Dev Opps and Server Admin help from time to time. We produce a number of web sites for our clients and use AWS hosting with a Dev and Production virtual server environment. My developers often spend time trouble shooting general System Admin issues that take them away from their core time developing. The issues are not too difficult to figure out, and they are very good but they could use help in this area so they can stay focused developing. This would be consistent on-going contract work, handled on a case by case / need basis at an hourly rate. Here are some terms my Developers have tossed out to me (a detailed discussion will follow if your interested). * AWS - Hardware * * Server Management * * Virtualization Platform - we're using virtual servers * * Lynix based * * PHP server * * ColdFusion Server * * Apache * * Some coldfusion and Java stuff, there's a .JAR file that needs to be rolled back from time to time * * Dependencies and Permissions issues now and then Thanks, I'm looking forward to talking with you.
