Hmm, interesting.. That site claims that currency issued prior to 1861
wasn't issued by the federal government.
Here's the lowdown on the "Kennedy Dollar Bill":
12. I have heard of $1 Bills that commemorate the assassination of John F.
Kennedy.
Coincidence
Really, it's a coincidence, albeit quite a big one. Prior to the Series
1963 $1 Federal Reserve Note, there had never been a $1 Federal Reserve
Note. Nearly all $1 notes in circulation at the time of Kennedy's death
were Silver Certificates, although there certainly had been Federal Reserve
Notes of other denominations in circulation for quite some time. So, the
new $1 Federal Reserve Notes might have attracted more attention than usual.
The coincidence comes in the following set of facts: 1) That the Series
issue was 1963; 2) that there is a Federal Reserve Bank in Dallas, Texas;
3) that in the numbering scheme used on Federal Reserve Banks, the Dallas
Federal Reserve is bank number 11; 4) that "K" is the 11th letter in the
alphabet. These facts converged into the big Kennedy Dollar myth: Some
believed that the series (1963) commemorated the year of his death, and the
Federal Reserve Bank number (11) commemorated the month. Inside the Federal
Reserve Seal, we find "Dallas, Texas," which people took to mean the place
where Kennedy was shot, and a large letter "K," which people took to
represent Kennedy, rather than Federal Reserve Bank number 11.
The Federal Reserve Bank locations, letters and numbers, had been in use on
our currency since the Series 1914 Federal Reserve Notes, and the Series
1963 $1 Notes issued through the other eleven Federal Reserve Banks were
designed similarly to the Dallas issues, although no one attributed any
special significance to, for instance, a note with "1s" in each corner,
"Boston" in the seal, or a big letter "A."
