OK, I know, this belongs in the PLUG list, but I unsubscribed myself
before I learned that there was a 'NO MAIL' option.

{and now that I've learned that small bit, I've set it on all my list
associations; so I'd appreciate a direct reply, since I won't see the
more general discussion for a few more weeks. Thanx!}

I'm assisting a friend upgrade from Win98a to RedHat7.2 on a Dell
Dimension XPS P100c. The system has 49MB installed, but has limited
the low DOS ram to 512K, of which Dell reserves 1K for system
functions. Is there any way to fix this?

I can get stuff running, but it requires the use of the boot floppy,
and holding down the CTRL key during the boot from the floppy, and
then the 'boot:' prompt comes up; pressing enter starts a normal boot.

Without the floppy, GRUB loads, but fails due to insufficient memory.

  Booting 'Red Hat Linux (2.4.7-10)'

Error 28: Selected item cannot fit into memory

When booting from the floppy:

It appears your computer has less than 512K of low ("DOS") RAM. Linux
needs at least this amount to boot. If you get this message in error,
hold down the Ctrl key while booting, and I will take your word for it.
Boot failed

When booting from the floppy, and holding down the Ctrl key:

SYSLINUX 1.52 2001-02-07 Copyright (C) 1994-2001 H. Peter Anvin

Press <return> (or wait 10 seconds) to boot your Red Hat system from
/dev/hda4. You may override the default linux kernel parameters by
typing "linux <params>", followed by <return> if you like.
