That's one reason that one set of families has two incomes.
There is another set of families that truly require two full-time workers
because the capitalists have decided the price the market will bear (the
highest price they can possibly ask) does not provide for BOTH their
enormous profits AND a living wage for the workers. Something has to give
and, more often than not, the giving is done by those who don't get to
make the decision.
Barbara Eherenreich wrote something about the service and manufacturing
industries employing the "great philanthropists of our age" whose unending
hard work and poverty mean comfort and wealth for the so-called middle
class.
