Golly, I'm pretty sure I included the reason right there in the request.
"so that your messages appear in the proper, chronological order with
everyone else's"
However, I'll go one further and explain why THAT is important (must I
write as though to a child?):
A conversation or discussion takes place in a chronological sequence. In
order to properly understand the context of each statement, its order in
the chronology must be determined. Context is important because it allows
a person to infer which facts are in evidence and which are not.
For example, consider the following discussion:
Jim: I'm going to the farmer's market.
Todd: What are you going to buy?
Jim: I'm going to buy eggs and milk.
Todd: I like eggs and milk.
If Todd were sending his messages via email and using an incorrect
timezone setting like you are (you're set to GMT, though your clock
reflects PST/PDT), the conversation would look like this:
Todd: What are you going to buy?
Todd: I like eggs and milk.
Jim: I'm going to the farmer's market.
Jim: I'm going to buy eggs and milk.
It makes a whole lot less sense and it's very hard to tell whether or not
Todd knew what Jim was going to buy when he made the statement about what
he likes.

Sure. Here you go, from Webster's New Universal Unabridged Dictionary:
mine: that or those of or belonging to me
yours: that or those of or belonging to you
Pretty straightforward, I think. The culture of you, the culture of
me. They can be the same culture.
