I don't think range should be much of a problem. The current bell is near
the ceiling on the second floor (where I'd wire in the remote/button for
the wireless system) and the extension bell would be on the floor
immediate above.
It looks like these wireless doorbells are quite inexpensive. I can
probably buy one and modify it without too much trouble. I might need
some advice on the details to that, though. More info when I have
concrete data.
