Maybe the inventor of 7-Up got lazy too early and didn't hold on for the real
winning formula.

The engineers at Kodak kept going until D76 had the right balance of materials for
BW film development in the 1920s.  They were optimizing for movie stock.  Around
40 years later another group kept at it until deciding that HC110 was the right
thing.  Ansel Adams agreed.
