Well, both talks are in the new Powells event calendar, hence the 
timing.  Both (mostly fantasy, not SF) authors have a strong connection
to Linux.  In fact, Charlie will be most of his time in the northwest
in discussions with Yahoo and Google.  Read the suggested excerpt from
The Atrocity Archives - the hacking of the Linux box occurs on page 2.

As both authors indirectly point out, a computer program is just a
magic spell that frequently works, but often calls forth dark forces
unintentionally.  And most of the dotcom business plans of a decade
ago were poorly written fantasy ...
