As usual, you are a font of hardware wisdom. Thank you.
I try to follow the above. The existing configuration has the two hard
drives on separate connectors (both as master), and the cd-rom as slave on
the second connector cable.

I've taken Galen's suggestion and ordered the SATA-connected Samsung
DVD/CD-everything-in-one-case drive from Newegg. I'll return the IDE cd-rw
Saturday.

I'm aware of them/him. What I need is a cable with a longer reach between
the end and internal connectors; those may not be available.
I've already asked Galen whether it matters to which SATA connector on the
motherboard I connect the optical drive. I've no experience with SATA
drives, but using a separate cable to a separate connector seems to be the
quickest, easiest, most practical solution. I may be wrong about this; I've
been wrong before about computer hardware.
