[PLUG-TALK] Comcast and home networks

I know there's some Comcast users here. 
My in-laws have Comcast cable modem service and want to add a second computer. 
I thought I could just plug a switch into the cable modem and run both computers
off of it and they'll get DHCP addresses from the cable modem.

But when I do a ipconfig on his current computer I see a 71.237.x.y address,
not the RFC 1918 I expected.

So, can you just plug in a little switch and both computers? Or do you have to
call Comcast and make arrangements?
