Apropos of nothing, I was planning a trip back east and looking at
the cost of checking two bags. I noticed that the more expensive
airlines tended to lose luggage more often:
Carrier loss rate 2 bag
per 1K bags cost $
---------------------------
Delta 6.90 25
American 6.85 40
Frontier 6.17 25
United 5.44 25
Alaska 5.36 50
US Air 5.36 25
Northwest 4.68 25
Continental 4.60 25
Jet Blue 3.27 20
Air Tran 3.25 10
Hawaiian 2.25 0
Doing a least squares fit, we learn that the cost of losing a bag is
around $2925. A hypothetical airline that lost no bags at all could
pay passengers $5.85 to carry two bags ...
In the future, I'm flying on Hypothetical Airways! (tm) Slogans:
We fly anywhere at any time!
If your luggage doesn't arrive, neither will you!
