Seen on LWN, an intriguing essay about the limits of Google's Summer 
of Code program:

I think he's absolutely right. Code is the heart and lifeblood of a 
functioning software environment, but there are other crucial bits as 
well: documentation, translations, interfaces and artwork, etc. Code 
can work without those things, but it can rarely work well...
