I have used lamp and dimmer module of the X-10 type.  These we from X10.com
and didn't last very long (a year or two).  I ordered a Leviton module
for installation
in the wall.  It is still working 7 years later.

I now have some RF controlled AC switches that have not had the problems for
over 3 years.
