   A bunch of years ago I rented a car for a business trip. The check
engine/service engine soon light came on shortly after I drove out of the
airport and stayed on while the engine was running for the entire 700+ miles
I drove. When I reported it to the rental company they told me it had
something to do with tire pressure; IIRC, an half-pound drop in one tire
would trigger the light. Perhaps it's the same on your '96 Ranger.
