SBC (already AT&T, since 2005) rebranded its wholly-owned subsidiary
Cingular to AT&T because SBC wanted to leverage the name they already
owned, and consolidate its various operations under a single
well-known brand. To say that Cingular renamed itself has the tail
wagging the dog. Cingular didn't have any autonomy in the matter.
