It's interesting to see the "pro-merger" view in this:
http://www.edn.com/article/517444-AT_T_s_39B_T_Mobile_buy_could_bring_more_balanced_smartphone_market_share.php
"Carriers have long been concerned about turning into 'dumb pipes'
delivering only voice and data traffic and have wanted to retain as much
ownership of the customer experience as possible. This has made some
carriers wary of a world where only a few suppliers (ie Google/Apple)
controlled the market. We think this could benefit the Blackberry (RIM) and
Windows Phone ecosystems as AT&T will want to keep healthy checks and
balances among suppliers,"

So in other words, a monopoly allows the carrier to screw their suppliers
*aaand* foist extra "services" on their customers. Sweet!

"Servicing" is what a bull does to a cow,
  Aaron
