One thing the author misses is the reason the Sonic.net dude in
California cites in how he does a gigabit for $70/month.  At least in
the short term, by and large, he says, it doesn't increase the amount
of data that each subscriber wants/gets, but merely gets it to them
quicker.  As a result, the aggregate bandwidth consumed by his users
doesn't go up very much.  So, his upstream bandwidth expenses don't
really go up significantly.
