On their web site I saw the name Mendel. This tells me that they are 
producing a version of the 3D printer promoted by the RepRap project. 
http://reprap.org/wiki/Main_Page There are other sources for materials 
to build that machine. I haven't looked for several months, but my 
recollection is that the materials could be had for under $1000.

Locally, the Dorkbot folks have been doing things with one of the RepRap 
variants. Go to http://dorkbotpdx.org/ and search on reprap for another 
couple of links.
