I only have Kindle and O'Reilly e-books, so I

I'll first note that I don't have a dedicated Kindle device; I just
have the Kindle app on my phone. I don't have any investment in a
dedicated reader.
Second, I only purchase Kindle books that I would purchase as a
mass-market paperback or off the remainder shelf.* (Mass-market
paperbacks are constructed of paper and glue designed to degrade in
months, not years.) That is, I buy a hard copy of any book that I'd
really like to keep and/or loan.
Third, I'm thinking seriously about getting a tablet for my server
room at work and loading it up with PDFs for all the hardware, so it
can serve as a one-stop reference when there are hardware faults.

* I've made exceptions to this rule when I've been sick. It's nice
to have a new book after doing a brief browsing stint at Amazon.
