[PLUG-TALK] Software Release Nomenclature

I am curious why some software (Debian, Ubuntu, and R come immediately to mind)
have names as well as numbers for each release. For example, the current R
release, 3.1.3, is named 'Smooth Sidewalk' and the forthcoming 3.2.0 is
named 'Full of Ingredients.'

My Web search found no explanation or history for this practice and I
would like to understand it.

I am curious yellow,

Rich
