Indeed, one of the forces that led to the Chinese restaurant boom (and
laundries as well) was that both Oregon and California had laws
prohibiting ownership of real property by Chinese. The purpose of the
laws was to keep them out of the gold fields (a mining claim is legally
an interest in real property). Since they couldn't make money at gold
mining they went into service businesses to meet the needs of miners.
