Multiple compromises reminds me of this[1] recent episode of TAL. Not to
suggest that it's similar, but... who knows.
ATM skimmers have definitely been found in PDX recently[2], and it's also
possible the card(s) could have been compromised in a POS breach like the
Target one? From what I read, it *could* take some time to get sold/used
after being stolen, but the value of the lists of stolen cards goes down
with age.
Although, given their use at local businesses, it's much more likely the
compromise was some local waiter/gas attendant/ATM skimmer who cloned the
card, rather than sophisticated online theft. If those businesses had
security cams, maybe the police would have some luck?
Personally, I'm considering going cash only, if only to see if it's even
possible these days.
