Dick,

   I assume you ran this a root, correct?

   It appears that there might be a permission problem with
/etc/sane.d/pie.conf. I'd move that out of the way, or change it's name, so
you don't encounter an overwrite issue.

   Perhaps try removing the 1.0.25 version prior to installing the 1.0.27
version.
