[PLUG-TALK] Very low text contrast on major news organizations web sites: why?

Almost all the newspaper web sites present image captions in a thin stroke
font with a foreground color of light grey on the white background. While
this lack of contrast might not bother younger eyeballs those of us with
many miles on our eyeballs find the text almost impossible to read.

Has anyone here any insights on why image captions on major news web sites
are presented this way?
