I tried Esc, but it did nothing. As for getting to the console, it's
Ctrl-Alt-F2-F5 in Ubuntuland, but it didn't occur to me at the time.
It's hard to think when you're seriously frustrated, as I was. For the
future I'll try to remember F11.
