Wait, I may have figured it out!

On the phone I went into Settings, then Storage, then Advanced, and the
phone announced that the USB drive couldn't be used until it was set
up. There was an option to set it up, so I did so. It said
'formatting,' and when it finished it appeared to be done. I couldn't
figure out how to unmount it, so I just shut the phone down.

When I plugged the drive into my laptop it was recognized, auto-mounted,
and the GUI file manager popped up a window.

It looks like my problem is solved, except that the 'formatting' added
a whole bunch of garbage. Initially all you see is a folder 'Android,'
and when you open it there is another folder 'data,' and in that folder
are numerous folders:

com.google.android.apps.translate
com.microsoft.skydrive
com.samsung.android.app.spage
com.samsung.android.aremojieditor
com.sec.android.gallery3d
com.touchtype.swiftkey

Plus a file of 0 bytes '.nomedia.' Most of the folders contain only
another folder 'cache' which is empty, except a couple which are
populated with folders up to six levels deep, each folder empty.

Now all I need to do is figure out which folder to put my MP3s in.
