That's really interesting as the Phoenix area has been sinking for decades.
The woody plants they're removing and replacing with native vegetation
thrive because they quickly invade and out-compete native vegetation for the
limited available water. In eastern Oregon Western Juniper has been taking
over from sage brush, manzanita, and other woody plants for more than a
century. The junipers, and crested wheat grass, are the basis for frequent,
extensive wildland fires and eliminate habitats for wildlife and livestock.
The massive drought now in its twenty-first year (the worst in 1200 years)
isn't helping matters.
