Hi Geoff et al,
I've made the list archives accessible outside of SSL, so the search
engines can crawl them. There is, however, no external link to them. I
propose we make the "Mailing list" link in the headers point to a new
page, with a containing listinfo and archive links for the main list,
the plug-talk list, and maybe another list or two, for easy human
reference, and at the bottom include links to the main Mailman listinfo
page and the archives directory. Something like this:
--------------
List Archive Description
plug archive Blah
plug-talk archive Blah
... ... ...
Complete list of mailing lists can be found at
https://lists.pdxlinux.org/mailman/listinfo.
Complete list of mailing list archives can be found at
http://lists.pdxlinux.org/pipermail/

I should also add that I submitted the URL to Google for indexing.

Excellent work, Wil.
And my compliments to Russell Senior for putting the archives into useable
shape, too!

Hey, don't get carried away. I don't think that Wil is working from
any product of my effort (because I haven't delivered anything
substantial yet). I did provide the old skylab archives, as I had
them, but the larger archive is still a work in progress.

Yeah, all I did was change the HTTP redirect that forced requests to
lists.pdxlinux.org to the SSL page; I didn't get the old stuff on-line.

What, neither of you two like attaboys? Okay, then, back to work you
Window-munching slackers! ;-)
More seriously, I did re-read Wil's original note after I sent this out,
& made the changes he suggested. Try the links out & see whether my
changes suck. (And since the archives are now linked from the front page,
that means Google's Scooter ought to have our entire mailing list in
their index within a month.

We might be wanting to tweek robots.txt a bit. If I do a search for:
site:lists.pdxlinux.org "seniorr"
The top hits are all the all-in-one-mbox file and the monthly file
archives. Maybe I am posting too much! ;-) There is probably a
google search modifier to only get .html files (??).
As a searcher, I am more likely to want to see individual messages.
Also, I would really prefer to see the real email addresses in the
pipermail html files instead of the munged "plug@lists.pdxlinux.org"
in the from line. The bodies often contain the real email address
anyway, so WTF is the munging buying us? I both: a) want people
reading my emails to be able to reach me; and b) want to be able to
reach people whose messages I am reading.
