I solved the problem by going to a larger cursor, using the "X-Big-Cursor"
mini howto (it's included in Debian, probably some other distributions as
well).  If you prefer to go with the color scheme approach rather than the
big cursor approach, reading this howto may be of some help in creating
your own (though I'm not sure about the color handling).
