[PLUG] Flag folders w/new mail under pine?

How do I configure pine or mutt to flag folders when they contain new
mail? For example, I sort PLUG-related email into a plug mail folder under
pine, but I can't tell when that folder contains new mail without actually
opening it. This becomes tedious when dealing with many folders. Is there
a way to configure the client so it lists when new messages are there,
and (even better) how many new messages? ie:

plug(3)  spam(4)  foo-list(19)

Any ideas?
