[PLUG] gcc-2.96?

According to the FSF Web site, any compiler labeled as 'gcc-2.96' is based
on the development thread from 2000; the pre-cursor to gcc-3.x. However,
that's the version number used by Red Hat for distribution numbers 7.2 and
7.3. I do have the latest package release, -112, installed. However, I
wonder if some of my porting problems are due to this version of gcc.

When I look at the requirements for gcc-3.2, I see some that are not on my
RH 7.3 systems. The advice I would like from you folks is what to do about
the compiler set. Do I just stick with what I have until I upgrade all
systems to RH 8.x? Has anyone moved to gcc-3.x on a RH 7.x machine; if so,
what was involved in addition to Freshening the rpm?

TIA,

Rich
