The braces instead of parens was my ignorance in trying to match the fonts from the install. I've changed the map to precede the root, rewritten the /grub/device.map, and replaced the braces. Why is the hdb listed as hd0 as I understood grub to start numbering with 0 so my hda=hd0 and hdb=hd1? Thanks all.
