Aso! This is what I was after. Thank you Dealy, Young and Rieck. I
posted my question to the local Java list as well, and there it swiftly
drifted off to the ol' tabs vs. spaces war. . . .
The mod_gzip site claims "all modern browsers released since early 1999"
are able to uncompress content, which I'll take with a grain of salt.
But as processors get faster, I don't see why this wouldn't become more
ubiquitous. After all, everyone wants their pages to load quickly, and
HTML ought to compress well.
