The newline substitution works on a RH 7.2 box I just tried w/ just 
vim-common and vim-minimal. I ran /bin/vi both with and without the -C 
"compatible mode" switch.

Does

rpm -V vim-minimal vim-common vim-enhanced

report any discrepencies?
