I'd concur on this.  I don't fear either now, but if you aren't expecting
them they can be a little disconcering at first.

(vi in particular.  I remember getting dumped in that the first time, and ^C
didn't break me out.  I was pretty lost.  Emacs at least let me turn around
and run away screaming.  vi grabbed me in it's vice-like grasp to crush me
until I figured out the magic escape button sequence.  Well not quite that
bad, but you get my drift.  :)

I'd say my vote for good newbie console editor goes to joe.  (Don't really
care for pico, really.)  Says "Control-H for help" right at the top, and lo
& behold when you hit it there it all is.  Not bad at all.

I still find myself firing it up a lot for quickie stuff, even with other
editors around, and after getting used to vi.

(Which should probably be learned eventually... if there is no other editor
on a system, that or a similar one is going to be what you have to use.)
