F-Prot has been one of the best scanners for over a decade. Their virus
files are consistently very comprehensive and up-to date. They have a
free command-line version available for linux:

The product includes a check_updates.sh script that uses "wget" to
retrieve updates automatically.

The Personal Windows version is $25 with free updates for a year. If you
have lots of systems to protect, it's $2/system with a 20-system
minimum. Dirt cheap! The Windows version includes a real-time resident
scanner to detect infections before you can spread them. (A must for any
antivirus software.)

They also have a free DOS version which is great for putting onto a
prebuilt portable bootable disinfection diskette.

2 free versions and one really cheap version.
