It's just that it is a lot easier to install an already built and
debugged package than to mess around learning to build it yourself,
especially when you have work to do an no time to muck with it. They
ask questions about how to do things that should have already been
solved for them, once and for all, by the distribution package
maintainer.
Somewhat implicit in this is that if you insist on building your own,
often a good way to get at a known working configuration and patch set
is to download the .diff.gz from Debian and see what they did.
