Yeah, DHCP seems to be the norm w/ broadband services these days. FWIW,
many of these places use long lease times on the DHCP leases, effectively
giving you a static IP w/o the administrative headache for them. I use
attbi and have 92:50:54 left on my currernt lease as I write this. None of
this has much to do with what you are asking. Sorry...

You probably want to pick a pair of private IP addresses (i.e. not routed
by core Internet routers) for the interfaces. These ought to work:
192.168.0.1 <-- Samba box
192.168.0.2 <-- Intranet interface on WinME box
Here are the ranges for the other private networks:
-----------------------------------------------------------
| RESERVED PRIVATE NETWORK ALLOCATIONS |
-----------------------------------------------------------
| Network | Netmask | Network Addresses |
| Class | | |
-----------------------------------------------------------
| A | 255.0.0.0 | 10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255 |
| B | 255.255.0.0 | 172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255 |
| C | 255.255.255.0 | 192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255 |
-----------------------------------------------------------

Sounds like you might benefit from having a router/firewall, if you want
to keep a home network setup more permenantly. Folks on this list might be
able to give more information if you're looking to roll-your-own solution
via floppyfw or somesuch. Several vendors (SMC, Linksys, D-link, etc.)
make these if you want to buy-and-play. Cheap too; I found a D-link for
$48 at newegg.com.
