Well, one solution is to use "unstable".  I do, and rarely have
problems.  

Another solution if you want newer versions is to "build-your-own".
I do this with Samba, because the Debian-packaged Samba has a bunch of
unwanted dependencies, like CUPS, last time I looked.

My understanding is that the "stable" packages don't get new versions,
but bug fixes are often incorporated in package revisions.
