I also have to wonder why not. I have been happily using Debian
unstable on my laptop for two years. They even have a mailing list
specifically for laptops. See

No. Does testing or unstable even come with a 2.4 kernel?

Not sure about that. I'm running ext3, and right now, when I boot, I
get a message saying "EXT3-fs warning: maximal mount count reached,
running e2fsck is recommended"
