[PLUG] Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE certification)

My previous employer went to NC and got his certification right after it was
released. He was the first RHCE in Oregon. He did it mainly as a marketing
tool for the company. According to him, you better have a pretty good
understanding of RedHat if you want to pass. If you can find a company that
is looking for RHCE's, it is definately worth it. But the MCSE overload has
soured the industry on certifications as a whole.

I got my RHCE last November (RH7.2). My employer paid for the one week
course and exam - otherwise I wouldn't have it. The training did help to
fill in a few holes, but it's mainly a refresher - don't expect to be able
to pass the exam if you have little prior experience with linux (Red Hat in
particular). It's more a validation of what you know than a learning
experience.

I think it was time well spent - and has helped me on the job. But I don't
know how much value it would have in terms of landing a new job. My employer
saw value in sending me and 5 of my cow-orkers in terms of marketing and
sales being able to hype the number of engineers that are certified (we're
all certifiable ;-).
