Try setting the "record /var/tmp/some_file_name" option in your ppp
options file, this will allow you to record the entire session at the byte
level with timing and everything, then try connecting again with ppp.
Once your session has failed, use the pppdump command (I think it gives
the most useful display with the -p option) to display/interpret the file.

NOTE: with regard to the LCP timeout, LCP is a low level protocol used for
managing the PPP link, the timeout indicates that when your side made a
request to your ISP's side of the link, it didn't get any response.
