Making the assumption that you don't have scsi cdrom/cdrw drives, you have to 
compile scsi emulation into your kernel.  This will solve some problems with 
ide cdroms (I don't remember which off the top of my head) however 
afterwards, your cdroms will show up as ide and scsi devices.

root at einstein:~# which cdrecord
/usr/bin/cdrecord
root at einstein:~# cdrecord -version
Cdrecord 1.10 (i686-pc-linux-gnu) Copyright (C) 1995-2001 Jörg Schilling

is a more accurate description of what's installed.  /usr/share/doc is the 
documentation folder and shows that the applicaition was installed at one 
time.
