[PLUG] Going online via cell phone?

My local (Corvallis) LUG told me to ask you guys about taking a Linux
laptop online via cellphone.

I'm in the process of signing up for a cell phone -- my first -- and
am hoping to be able to use the phone as a modem from my laptop (which
runs Debian Woody).

Does any of you know anything about this? In particular, if it makes
a difference what phone I choose I'd better find out now. :-)

A quick google search turned up only this

<http://cmb.physics.wisc.edu/~friess/laptop-cell-howto.html>

which says it's possible but doesn't mention brands etc.

I'm afraid I don't know enough about what's required to know even what
to ask. But if you've used a cellphone (on Verizon's network, if it
matters) successfully, or tried and failed, please let me know.

Thanks,

--Eric House
