[PLUG] Codec97 Sound chip

Integrated sound is becoming increasingly popular
these days, with the Codec97 sound chip found in quite
a few modern computers. Among the Linux distributions
I have used, Mandrake and Red Hat both recognize the
chip, but both like to disable it in BIOS upon reboot.
(I thought it might be a Mandrake-specific problem,
the devfs stuff, but Red Hat does it, too.)

If anyone else on this list is aware of this problem
and knows how to cope with it, the information would
be much appreciated. (One workaround is another sound
card--then the Codec97 can be left disabled--but its
performance is otherwise acceptable, at least for many users.)
