Try setting up true type fonts. This made a world of difference for me.

The full explanation for crappy fonts is way more information than you need
:-), but check whether you have abiword installed - it installs some truly
ugly fonts that end up matching many font requests from many applications.
If you don't need it, this would be a good time to nuke it.
