[PLUG] A package rebuild fails

  Trying to upgrade gtk+ to 1.2.10, the .src.rpm rebuild bails out with
these error messages:

/usr/share/automake/am/lang-compile.am: AMDEP does not appear in
AM_CONDITIONAL
gtk/Makefile.am: MAINTAINERCLEANFILES must be set with =' before using +='
gtk/Makefile.am: EXTRA_HEADERS must be set with =' before using +='
gtk/Makefile.am: EXTRA_DIST must be set with =' before using +='
gtk/Makefile.am: CLEANFILES must be set with =' before using +='
gtk/Makefile.am:313: libgtk_la_SOURCES includes configure substitution

RPM build errors:
    Bad exit status from /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.65126 (%prep)

  I have automake-1.6 which is apparently the current version. I'd
appreciate someone shedding light on the reason (or possible reasons) for
this error.
