During the build stage, will abiword let you specify where to install
it?  If it uses configure, the answer is almost surely yes and reading
through the equivalent of the INSTALL file will tell you what switches
to throw to make it do that.

The GNU configure default is:
  ./configure --prefix=/your/very/own/path
